A small studio, deliberately

You speak to the person who designs your database and writes your code. Nothing is passed to a junior team after the proposal is signed.

Most software fails on the boring parts

Not on the architecture — on a form that asks for information nobody has, a report that cannot answer the one question management always asks, a system that needs a developer for a change a receptionist should make in ten seconds.

Coding Smart came out of working in and around education and the non-profit sector, where budgets are real, staff turnover is normal, and software has to keep working after the person who commissioned it has moved on. That is a demanding environment, and it shapes how everything here gets built: plainly, documented, and handed over properly.

The name is the whole argument. Writing code is easy to buy. Writing the right code — after understanding what the work actually is — is the part that saves you money.

Commitments we will be held to

01

Understand before quoting

No price before the work is understood. A number produced in five minutes is a number that gets revised later, at your expense.

02

Say when it is a bad idea

If off-the-shelf software solves it for a monthly fee, that is the recommendation — even though there is no project in it for us.

03

No lock-in, ever

Code, data, domain and hosting belong to you and are documented well enough for a stranger to take over.

04

Design for the daily user

The person entering records a hundred times a day matters more than the demo. Their screen gets designed first.

05

Finish properly

A project is not done at deployment. It is done when your team can run it, change the content, and knows what to do when something breaks.

And one thing we will not do

Build something we can tell you will regret. If the honest answer is “fix your process first”, that is the answer you get.

Where we are most useful

Not because other sectors are unwelcome — because in these ones we already know the questions to ask, which makes the whole project shorter.

Schools & education

Learning platforms, course content, student records, parent communication, bilingual curriculum material.

Non-profits & NGOs

Programme and impact websites, donation paths, beneficiary databases, reporting for funders.

Professional practices

Accounting, legal and consulting firms: client records, document automation, portal integrations.

Growing businesses

The point where spreadsheets stop working and an off-the-shelf system does not fit how you operate.

A good fit, and a bad one

We are a good fit if…
  • You can describe the problem, even if not the solution
  • Someone on your side can answer questions during the build
  • You would rather have one thing done properly than five done roughly
  • You want to own and understand what you paid for
We are the wrong fit if…
  • You need twenty developers starting next Monday
  • The scope must stay undefined but the price must be fixed
  • The decision is entirely about being the cheapest quote
  • You want a bought theme dropped in with your logo on it
Tell us what’s slowing you down.
